Acrylic Standee
Acrylic Standee
Overview
Acrylic standees (also commonly referred to as acrylic standees or acrylic character standees) are a common type of decoration, collectible, or merchandise. They are mainly made from acrylic (chemical name polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA), a transparent thermoplastic known for its high transparency, durability, lightness, and ease of processing and shaping, which is why it is widely used. A typical acrylic standee consists of two parts: a flat acrylic body printed with a design (usually characters, logos, or other designs) and a base used to support the body upright, often also made of acrylic. The body and base are often connected and fixed via a slot structure. Designs are typically printed directly onto one or both sides of the acrylic sheet using UV printing technology, and then precisely cut along the design outline using laser cutting technology to form the final shape. To prevent scratching the surface during transport and handling, the front and back of the standee are often covered with a protective film that needs to be peeled off before use. Acrylic standees are particularly popular in the ACG (Animation, Comics, Games) culture due to their vibrant colors, high detail reproduction, a certain sense of three-dimensionality (compared to paper prints), and lower cost compared to traditional figures. They are often sold as merchandise for anime and game characters.
History
Acrylic standees originated and became popular in East Asia (especially Japan, Mainland China, South Korea, and Taiwan). They have now become a widely welcomed product form in the global popular culture and creative products market.
Definition and Structure
An acrylic standee is a common type of decoration, collectible, or merchandise. It is mainly made from acrylic (chemical name polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA), a transparent thermoplastic known for its high transparency, durability, lightness, and ease of processing and shaping, which is why it is widely used. A typical acrylic standee consists of two parts: a flat acrylic body printed with a design (usually characters, logos, or other designs) and a base used to support the body upright, often also made of acrylic. The body and base are often connected and fixed via a slot structure.
Manufacturing
Designs are typically printed directly onto one or both sides of the acrylic sheet using UV printing technology, and then precisely cut along the design outline using laser cutting technology to form the final shape. To prevent scratching the surface during transport and handling, the front and back of the standee are often covered with a protective film that needs to be peeled off before use.
Applications and Popularity
Acrylic standees are particularly popular in the ACG (Animation, Comics, Games) culture due to their vibrant colors, high detail reproduction, a certain sense of three-dimensionality (compared to paper prints), and lower cost compared to traditional figures. They are often sold as merchandise for anime and game characters. In addition, they are also widely used in:
- Fan culture and collection: As collectibles for fans of idols, virtual YouTubers (VTubers), anime characters, etc.
- Desktop decoration: Used to decorate desks, display cabinets, office desks, and other spaces.
- Promotion and marketing: As event souvenirs, corporate promotional materials, or product display props.
- Personalized customization: Patterns can be customized according to personal preferences as unique gifts.
Variations
Their size, shape, number of layers (for example, standees with multiple background layers), and surface effects (such as glitter, laser, spot UV) can vary widely to meet different design needs and aesthetic preferences.
